What really grinds my gears…

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

what grinds my gears…Is how hard it is to compare food from the nutritional information on the boxes. Take this example here- two different styles of Melba Toast, with info for TWO different amounts! WTF! Do I really need to bring a calculator to the damn grocery store to make a proper comparison? It gets pretty damn frustrating when you’re standing in the food isle doing mental gymnastics trying to figure out which food has more calories in it. I’ve lost it and gone on a rant about this on more than one occasion.

Melba Toast 1

I mean seriously, WTF.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is what grinds my gears. Goodnight.

Clocktower Brew Pub on Beechwood

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

I headed over to Ottawa last weekend in search of a new place and lucked out!

Clocktower Brew Pub

That’s right… BLUEBERRY BACON PANCAKES. They were awesome. I had a problem with my camera, so sadly I don’t have any good pictures of the pancakes themselves :-(

$8.95 coffee extra. map.

Sunday Brunch Chez Lucien

Monday, January 28th, 2008

Chez LucienSunday was a gorgeous day to get out and head for the Byward Market in search of brunch. I had wanted to go to Chez Lucien for ages and was worried it would be packed since it’s a small place. My fears, however, were false, and the three of us sat in the front area, surrounded by windows. Ahhh, natural light makes for wonderful photos…

There were just 3 choices… Eggs Benedict, Eggs Florentine, and the one with salmon whose real name escapes me at the moment.

Gen had the Florentine:

And Steve and I both had the Benedict:

And for a closeup:

The potato concoctions were totally awesome, as were the eggs. 8 bucks a pop coffee extra.

In some other Breakfast Blogger news, the post I made back in December about the Bacon Weave, which I can’t take credit for, got noticed by TasteSpotting.com. This brought on quite the spike of traffic and comments on that entry, and some bacon related drama ensued. It is rather amusing, and I urge you to check it out: The Great Bacon Weave Drama of January 25, 2008.

Nature’s Path Organic Corn Flakes

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

Happy New Year! It’s been a while since I last posted– I had a pretty busy holiday season this year.

I decided to pick up a bag of Organic Corn Flakes a couple of weeks ago..

Nature\'s Path Organic Corn Flakes

It’s a bit pricey at around 7 dollars or so, but pretty tasty and worth it in my opinion, especially if you’re trying to avoid processed ingredients. I was pretty blown away when I saw this:

Nature\'s Path Organic Corn Flakes

Organic corn meal, concentrated organic grape juice (?!?), and sea salt. That’s it!!

Sam Snead’s

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

Whoa, this is one of the best Benedicts I’ve had around the Ottawa area…

Sam Snead\'s

Sam Snead’s is in Chateau Cartier at 1170 Aylmer Road. There was a brunch available, but we decided to order from the menu instead.

Sam Snead\'s

That’s one tasty hollandaise they’re using there, lemme tell ya.

And a little view from above…

Shhh, don’t tell anyone that I took some fancy jams home! \(^o^)/

T’was around $11.

Sunflower Seed Bread French Toast

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

As you may know, you can Frenchify just about anything. In the past, I’ve made french toast danishes and stuffed french toast sandwiches. I happened to have some sunflower seed bread kicking around and decided to give it a shot.

Sunflower Seed Bread French Toast

I just love this bread to bits. I get it at the IGA grocery store here in Hull. If someone knows where you can get this in Ottawa, please let me know!

Sunflower Seed Bread French Toast

My french toast mix is simple… a few eggs, a bit of milk, cinnamon and vanilla extract. As you can probably tell, this morning’s mix happened to get quite a bit of vanilla extract!

Sunflower Seed Bread French Toast

I threw them on to my new griddle which I’ve been meaning to blog about… it’s over 2 feet wide and can be submerged in water for cleaning. I’m totally in love with it.

Sunflower Seed Bread French Toast

Since the bread was thick, I let it fry for a while…

Sunflower Seed Bread French Toast

I just added a touch of maple syrup, took some pictures, then went to town. The texture of the sunflower seeds really makes this quite delightful. The extra time I took frying these suckers up meant that they just had a hint of crispiness too.

YUM :-)

Louis’ Restaurant

Louis\' Restaurant
Payment 2 for fixing KJ’s computer was in the form of breakfast at Louis’, over at 181 McArthur Avenue. It was full when we arrived, just before 11 a couple Sundays ago, so we had to wait a few minutes before getting seated.

I had the eggs and sausage:

If we had shown up earlier, I would have gotten the bacon egg special for $3.75! I think I’d like to try the pizza from this place sometime as well…

The White Horse

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

BSODPoor KJ… her computer was suffering from terminal BSOD, or Blue Screen of Death. As you can see on the side here, it was some sort of pagefile problem. After 15 minutes of fiddling around trying to cure it, it began apparent that this wasn’t going to be a simple fix. So off we went for breakfast to mull over our options, KJ’s treat! Woot, this is the best kind of computer call… one that comes with a free breakfast!

KJ took me to the White Horse, not too far from the Ottawa VIA train station at 294 Tremblay Road. I was pretty impressed with the breakfast and they have great prices too!

I had the Rib Steak and 2 Eggs:

And KJ had the Two Eggs with Corn Beef Hash:

mmmmmMMmmm, yummy… Mine was $8.95 and KJ’s was $4.95. Very awesome.

Stay tuned, KJ’s computer is now fixed and I have to return it next weekend. Payment is another free breakfast!
