The Smart Egg

Leave it to the British Egg Information Service to come up with this: An egg that shows you went it’s been boiled just the way you want! All you have to do is buy the type you want- soft, medium or hard. A special ink on the egg will suddenly appear at the appropriate time to inform you that it’s ready!

I’m a bit jealous of the Brits… armed with Smart Eggs and perfect toast soldier cutters, they are certainly the world leader concerning the art of how to enjoy a soft boiled egg.

On the other hand, the four-minute rule for soft boiled eggs isn’t that hard to grasp ;) Instead of hovering over boiling water waiting for the the ink to appear, a handy little kitchen timer would do a pretty fine job. However, the pure breakfast-geek value of the smart egg makes this something very, very cool indeed! Please send me some when they come out! PLEASE!

In other breakfast news: check out Natalie Dee’s experience cooking an Emu Egg. It didn’t work out too well. Found on boingboing.net.

I love how she “dropped a Jackson on an emu egg.” I first got hip to this expression after seeing the Lazy Sunday video by the kids from Saturday Night Live. They refer to “Hamiltons” in this awesome parody. From the wikipedia entry on Lazy Sunday: “Hamiltons” are U.S. ten-dollar bills, so called because they contain a portrait of Alexander Hamilton. Common rap slang has dubbed hundred-dollar bills “Benjamins” and the line is a reference to Puff Daddy’s “It’s All about the Benjamins.”

A “Jackson” is a 20.

[…] I found this in the last seasonal Lee Valley mini-catalog that gets sent to my door. It may not be as cool as an egg that times itself, but it’s still pretty neat. […]
