Mikes

Sunday, August 27th, 2006

Yikes.. I’m on day two of being hungover after my bachelor party on Friday. I did have a great breakfast yesterday (the hangover didn’t kick in ’till a few hours after that) at the Mayflower, one of the best places in Ottawa for breakfast. But today, I walked over to Mikes in Hull in the rain with my soon-to-be wife for some breakfast yummies.

I had a super awesome breakfast with french toast and eggs:

Oh my.. the sweet and salty combination from the maple syrup, potatoes, sausage and egg yolk made for one hell of a party in my hungover mouth. I made a satisfied taste-happy moan at one point that I hope no one else heard.

An eater’s worst nightmare

0815 117

I recently spent a week in Toronto, visiting with family and friends belonging to my very special ladyfriend. In anticipation, I had done some serious research planning my free hours. I daydreamt of wandering and noshing my way through Chinatown, visiting Pacific Mall (the world’s largest Asian mall), checking out some farmer’s markets and generally eating the best of what Toronto has to offer.

The evening before we hit the 401 west, I made sure to charge my digi-cam batteries to their maximum and had also printed up a few sheets of notes loaded with names and addresses: Pomegranite, Mars, Kon Jug Yuen, Chinese Traditional Bun, La Fromagerie, Natural Beef Meat Shop, Dipamo’s Barbecue, Ethiopian spice Store, Roncesvalles Bakeri & Deli, etc.

I was fairly excited, or at least as excited as I could get about Toronto. I know, I know - but hey - I wasn’t going to Istanbul, or even New York City. Then, as I began to pack my favorite eating clothes (yes, I have favorite eating clothes - mostly dark shirts that can camouflage stains) I felt a strange rumbling in my stomach.

I was suddenly in so much pain I could not finish packing, and proceeded to spend almost my entire visit to Toronto doubled over in stomach cramps. Most of my eating consisted of Pepto-Bismol. Damnit!

Bistro Renoir

Sunday, August 20th, 2006

Despite my trying to hide the fact that it was my birthday, a few of the girls at work managed to take me out for breakast last week! It was very, very sweet of them. We went to the Bistro Renoir in downtown Hull and found a cozy booth inside.

Bistro Renoir

N went all out and had the Grand Renoir.. Two pancakes, two eggs, fruit, toast and sausage! The pancakes are burried in there somewhere:

KJ had the Steak and Eggs:

Pancakes!

From his webpage, GiR2007 says: “I’m am a songwriter/video producer from Scotland, I make videos and songs because it’s what I love to do.” He also loves to make pancakes!

This cute video was found via grow-a-brain. Props to Gir2007 for having a bottle of pure Canadian maple syrup to go with his awesome pancakes!

Retro Breakfast

Monday, August 14th, 2006

Our lovely fellow breakfast blogger Azureus sent me an awesome book in the mail for my birthday last week!

Retro Breakfast

It’s full of great recipes like the classic Toad-in-a-Hole and tons of stuff I’ve never even heard of before. I’m going to love this book!

I *really* dig the 50’s retro graphic art throughout the book!

Retro Breakfast2

Retro Breakfast can be found here on Amazon.com.

Stay tuned folks, I’ve got a big backlog of breakfasts to post about! You’ll have to excuse me for the gap in posts in the last week since I’ve been quite busy with my birthday and getting wedding plans sorted out. Also, Spanky is out of town right now and Azureus is super busy with Mommy duties.

In other breakfast blogger news: I’m really pleased with the influx of traffic we’ve had in the past month! First we got Stumbled Upon, then a week later were Grow-a-Brained, and then we got Slashfooded! Awesome! And the posts about Ziploc omelets seems to be a never ending source of interest!

Woo!

Caffé Mio

Thursday, August 3rd, 2006

Last Saturday I geared up (that means I grabbed my camera, wallet and keys) and headed out to Westboro in Ottawa hoping to find a new place to have breakfast. My friend Betsy suggested that I try the Village Café, but was sad to see that they were closed as I drove by. So I turned around and headed east on Richmond (or is it Wellington? This road drives me nuts with the way it changes names on the same route) past Island Park and saw some people on a terrace. I did a U-turn and saw this:

Caffé Mio

Woo! I’ve been to Caffé Mio before and love their awesome coffee and dinner. It looks like they have a bit of a fanclub as well!

I sat outside on the terrace and ordered one of the specials of the day: A frittata with sausage (Italian I think), grilled red pepper and goat cheese.

Caffé Mio

Yummy! 8 bucks, coffee and juice extra.

SOMEONE PLEASE tell me there are other spots in Westboro open for breakfast! I’ve already checked out the Newport and loved it. I bet The Works could have fun doing a breakfast thing there if they wanted to. There MUST be other spots open for breakfast around here, but I just don’t know about them. Someone send me some hints to some Westboro breakfast places please!

The Smart Egg

Tuesday, August 1st, 2006

Leave it to the British Egg Information Service to come up with this: An egg that shows you went it’s been boiled just the way you want! All you have to do is buy the type you want- soft, medium or hard. A special ink on the egg will suddenly appear at the appropriate time to inform you that it’s ready!

Smart Egg

Link to the story (found on reddit.com).

I’m a bit jealous of the Brits… armed with Smart Eggs and perfect toast soldier cutters, they are certainly the world leader concerning the art of how to enjoy a soft boiled egg.

On the other hand, the four-minute rule for soft boiled eggs isn’t that hard to grasp ;) Instead of hovering over boiling water waiting for the the ink to appear, a handy little kitchen timer would do a pretty fine job. However, the pure breakfast-geek value of the smart egg makes this something very, very cool indeed! Please send me some when they come out! PLEASE!

In other breakfast news: check out Natalie Dee’s experience cooking an Emu Egg. It didn’t work out too well. Found on boingboing.net.

I love how she “dropped a Jackson on an emu egg.” I first got hip to this expression after seeing the Lazy Sunday video by the kids from Saturday Night Live. They refer to “Hamiltons” in this awesome parody. From the wikipedia entry on Lazy Sunday: “Hamiltons” are U.S. ten-dollar bills, so called because they contain a portrait of Alexander Hamilton. Common rap slang has dubbed hundred-dollar bills “Benjamins” and the line is a reference to Puff Daddy’s “It’s All about the Benjamins.”

A “Jackson” is a 20.
